Uttarakhand Glacier Burst

On 7th February 2021, a glacier near Joshimath in Chamoli district broke off resulting massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river. More than 100 people are missing, 10 dead bodies have been recovered so far and more than 7 people rescued by ITBP forces. Uttarakhand state government has announced high alert in the districts on the banks of Ganga. SDRF, NDRF, and PAC flood company are kept on high alert.

The Glacier lake outburst due to the breaking of the Nanda Devi glacier washed off the Tapovan-Reni power project where more than 150 labors were working while this avalanche happened. Large downstream of ice discharge too away homes near the banks of the river, two dams and roads nearby reminding Uttarakhand people of June 2013 Kedarnath floods.

Glacier outburst happens due to various reasons like an avalanche of snow, erosion, a build-up of ice pressure, melting of a massive glacier, etc. Nanda Devi is the second highest peak in the Himalayas after Kanchanjunga. This devastating Glacier outburst may have killed many people as laborers of Rishi Ganga Power projects were trapped inside the tunnel and other deep areas. Uttarakhand Chief Minister T. Rawat announced Rs. 4 Lac cash as financial assistance to the families of the deceased.

The people of India stand with the families of people who died in this unfortunate natural calamity. The rescue will continue for several days. Let's hope many more people will be rescued alive.
